Scholarship Scam : Issue taken up with PM

Srinagar : The  Prime Minister Special Scholarship Scheme (PMSSS) Scholarship which was launched in 2011 by government of India to provide has been from the past few days under scanner. Under this scheme 5000 fresh scholarships are to be provided per annum to the students of Jammu and Kashmir.  The Scheme provides  amount of three lakh tuition fee and one lakh of hostel charges to  the students who  got admission under the scheme.

Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah  told Legislative Council that Crime Branch has been asked to look into the complaints against the NGOs reportedly fiddling in the Prime Minister’s Special Scholarship Scheme (SSS) for the meritorious students of the State adding that the reports of cheating by some NGOs has besmeared the reputation of the scheme and marred the future of various students.

According to reports many students who have got this scholarship have not been given the amount till now.

Minister for higher education Mohammad Akbar Lone while replying to a Calling Attention Notice of Dr. Shafi Ahmad Wani in the House today said that “Higher Education Department is not implementing Prime Minister’s Special Scholarship programme for Minorities, however, the Government of India, Ministry of Human Resource Department has announced a Special Scholarship scheme for the students belonging to J&K passing out class 12th or equivalent exam from the J&K Board of School Education or from CBSE-affiliated schools, located in J&K, affiliated to or recognized by UGC/AICTE”.

He further said that "J&K State has no role but to publicize the scheme through print media for awareness of general public and student community while the scheme is being implemented by MHRD through AICTE,"

The Minister said "students, who have obtained admission in various colleges/institutions outside the State but are not eligible under the norms of the Special Scholarship scheme, have not been paid scholarship by MHRD, Government of India,"

Considering their difficulties, Chief Minister has taken up the matter with the Prime Minister, he added.
