Fierce gunbattle between militants and army took place in Srinagar as forces zeroed in following reports of militants hiding in a house of a residential area in heart of the city

The 22-hour long fierce gunfight in the outskirts of Srinagar city concluded today with the killing of two militants and injuries to two cops while two houses also suffered damages in the firefight.

Officials said that acting on a tip-off, police’s Special Operation Group (SOG) and 23 Battalion of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and SSB laid a cordon around Shadab Colony on 90 feet road in Ahmadnagar area. “We had specific input about the presence of militants,” police official said.

As the mammoth general elections have kicked off in the country, the militant attacks have increased in the valley in order to instill fear among the masses and show their repulsion against the establishment.

The militants, started heavy firing on the forces when they tried to make advances towards the residential house of Abdul Majeed Rangraiz, where the militants were holed up.Two houses, which belonged to Abdul Majeed Rangraiz and Mukhtar Ahmad, were gutted during the exchange of fire. “The houses caught fire due to grenades and gas cylinders,” police said . 

At around 4:30 pm, forces managed to kill militants after they launched final assault “Forces fired grenades and continued intense firing during which the two houses caught heavy fire while firing also stopped from militants side,”

The restive region has witnessed numerous militant attacks, insurgency, and infiltration attempts from across the border in the last two decades.
